Chocolate May Reduce Heart Failure Risk

Washington, D.C., DC, United States (AHN) - A study being promoted by the American Heart Association suggests moderate chocolate consumption could lower the risk of heart failure, particularly in women.

In the study, conducted by Swedish researchers, 31,823 middle aged and elderly Swedish women were asked about the quality of chocolate they ate and this information was compared to their risk of heart failure. The quality of the chocolate was measure by the density of the cocoa content. The higher quality would be compared to darker chocolate in American standards, according to an American Heart Association statement.

The study found that women who ate an average of one to two servings of high-quality chocolate per week had a 32-percent less risk of developing heart failure. Woman who ate one to three servings per month had a 26-percent lower risk.

But like with most things in life, moderation is key. Women who consumed at least one serving daily didn't appear to enjoy the same heart-health benefits, the researcher said.

The study appears in the journal Circulation: Heart Failure.
